Jackal Care
Overview
Jackals are wolf-like magical constructs of wind and sand. Created by djinn, Jackals are a way to cleanse tormented magic. Their sandy, rune-covered bodies possess the ability to teleport through Sand Portals and blink short distances.
Native Habitat
Jackals are created in Sand Jackal Run in The Desolation.
Diet
Jackals do not need to consume food due to their magical construct nature. They do find enjoyment in collecting unbound energy, and their aura glows when they are full.
Grooming
Due to their body composition, jackals need to replenish their sand occasionally. This is accomplished with a 'sand bath', ideally using sand from the Crystal Desert.
Common Health Issues
Worn Runes
Jackals retain their shape due to their magical runes. If a rune is worn or damaged they will not be able to form properly.
Overcharged
If a jackal overfills on unbound energy to dangerous levels it can be highly detrimental. In extreme cases the jackal will collapse in on itself.
Dust Mites
Smaller versions of typically seen Dust Mites have been known to attach to passing jackals. Their presence causes discomfort and itching.
Griffon Care
Overview
Griffons are winged, owl-like quadrupeds with large webbed wings. While they lack the mobility of skyscales, griffons are extremely good at gliding over long distances. When engaging an enemy they prefer to swoop into them.
Native Habitat
Griffons are native to the Crystal Desert.
Diet
Griffons are carnivorous opportunistic hunters. They eat a variety of mammals, amphibians, and other birds. They are unable to chew and must swallow their prey whole.
Grooming
Griffons regularly preen themselves and apply a protective oil they generate themselves to their feathers. Tamed griffons will need their talons trimmed regularly.
Common Health Issues
Feather-Picking
Griffons who are overly stressed will pluck out their own feathers. This leads to bald patches and makes the griffons susceptible to infection.
Egg Binding
Female griffons can have difficulties laying eggs if they aren't getting enough calcium in their diet. This condition can be fatal if untreated.
Wing Injuries
Griffon wings have feathery and leathery portions. The leather sections can be more easily damaged or torn.
Raptor Care
Overview
Raptors are bipedal carnivorous reptilians with powerful legs and sharp claws. Due to their incredible speed and agility, they are an excellent choice for traversing rough terrain. Raptors are capable of leaping great distances across canyons. They also rely heavily upon their tail for combat.
Native Habitat
Raptors are native to the Crystal Desert.
Diet
Entirely carnivorous, a raptor's diet consists solely of red meat. Raptors are opportunistic hunters eating anything from small rodents to moas.
Grooming
Tamed raptors can benefit from monthly nail trimming, particularly with their foreclaws and dewclaws. Hindclaws need less trimming if regularly exercising.
Common Health Issues
Bone Disease
Raptors that are not fed a proper diet are prone to vitamin deficiency. This can lead to malformed bones, swollen limbs, and decreased appetite.
Dental Problems
Some raptors may experience dental issues such as tooth loss, cavities, or infections. These issues will make feeding incredibly difficult.
Tail Sprain
Raptors that overuse their tail while fighting are susceptible to damaging it. While not normally life-threatening this does limit the raptor from using their main defense.
Roller Beetle Care
Overview
Roller Beetles are scarab beetles that are enhanced by a combination of substances and asuran science. They can curl into a ball and move at extreme speeds. Riding a roller beetle requires more finesse than other mounts due to this. They are also able to smash through barriers.
Native Habitat
Roller Beetles are created from scarab beetles in the Crystal Desert.
Diet
Roller Beetles are carnivorous scavengers that eat carrion, feces, and decaying plant matter. Due to their modified nature roller beetles can consume toxic substances.
Grooming
Though lacking their full antennae from when they were scarab beetles, roller beetles still attempt to clean them as a 'phantom limb'. Tamed roller beetles often have specialized shell wax applied monthly.
Common Health Issues
Cracked Shell
While roller beetle shells are incredibly durable, they can still be damaged. Cracked shells impede their ability to roll into a ball.
Fungal Infection
Roller Beetles exposed to more humid and diverse environments can develop fungal infections beneath their shell. Left untreated these can be fatal.
Damaged Limbs
Typically roller beetles protect their inner limbs while traveling. However, sometimes these limbs can become stuck or otherwise damaged.
Siege Turtle Care
Overview
Siege Turtles are enormous turtles outfitted with an attached saddle and turrets. Capable of carrying two people at once, siege turtles are the mount of choice for mass combat. Those who bond with them can temporarily link their life force.
Native Habitat
Siege Turtles are native to Cantha.
Diet
Siege Turtles are omnivores and require a variety of foods to avoid malnutrition. The most common diet is a mixture of fish, fruit, and vegetables. Due to their size siege turtles eat a large quantity daily.
Grooming
Siege Turtles should have their attachments removed and cleaned regularly. Their shells must be thoroughly brushed and bathed to avoid any build-up.
Common Health Issues
Equipment Chafing
Improperly cared for and applied equipment can dig into a siege turtle's skin or damage its shell.
Hearing Loss
Repeated proximity to turrets and other weapons of war can lead to hearing loss. Results may be temporary or permanent if left untreated.
Shell Rot
Siege Turtles are prone to algae growth on their shells, particularly if often traveling underwater. If the algae gets under the shell scales it can lead to rotting.
Skimmer Care
Overview
Skimmers are large, amphibious animals that float using a combination of specialized valves and magic. Their 'wings' allow them to travel over water and quicksand making them great desert and sea companions. They can also invoke restorative magic by spinning their bodies.
Native Habitat
Skimmers are native to the Elon Riverlands in the Crystal Desert.
Diet
Skimmers are omnivorous and lean heavily toward a fish-centric diet. Fruits and vegetables are often added as nutritious filler when fish are scarce. Tamed skimmers will continue to eat as long as food is available, even to their detriment.
Grooming
Tamed skimmers are highly fond of being groomed and will actively seek it out. Their leathery skin needs to be moisturized every day if not traveling through watery environments.
Common Health Issues
Dry Skin
Skimmers are native to riverlands and require their skin to be hydrated. They can dry out quickly leading to cracked and painful skin.
Clogged Valves
The valves on skimmers aid them in floating and drawing moisture from the air. When clogged with sand or other things, it limits their capability to do so.
Overeating
When presented with food, Tamed Skimmers will continue to eat until all of it is gone. This can lead to stomach issues and accidentally eating non-food.
Skyscale Care
Overview
Skyscales resemble a dragon with leathery wings, and sharp claws that can scale walls. Capable of flight and breathing fire skyscales are incredibly useful for travel. Once trained they possess the ability to magically close rifts.
Native Habitat
Skyscales are native to the Mists.
Diet
Skyscales are carnivorous animals and should have magic infused into their meals. Varied forms of magic are recommended for a balanced diet.
Grooming
A skyscale should have access to an area to soak that is magically imbued. This helps prevent shedding issues and promotes their magical health.
Common Health Issues
Dysecdesis
Some skyscales experience difficulty shedding, a trait sometimes passed down from the first generation. This can lead to irritation and increased stress.
Magical Imbalance
Skyscales not exposed to varied magical types will experience issues similar to nutrition deficiency. They may become lethargic and injury easily.
Burns
When engaging enemies, skyscales use their fire-breathing blast to strike. Overuse of this ability can cause burns on their face and mouth.
Springer Care
Overview
Springers are large, rabbit-like animals known for their impressive jumping abilities. Using their long, powerful hind legs, they can leap great distances. Springers are also capable of forceful, flipping cannonballs to defend themselves from foes.
Native Habitat
Spingers are native to the Desert Highlands in the Crystal Desert.
Diet
Springers are herbivores that consume hay and leafy greens. Tamed springers are also often fed carrots to boost their energy for jumping.
Grooming
Tamed springers must be brushed at least twice a week to avoid matting. They also need regular ear cleaning and nail trimming.
Common Health Issues
Hairballs
Springers constantly groom themselves and ingest their hair while doing so. Excessive self-grooming and hair eating can lead to hairball blockage in their body.
Overgrown Teeth
Springer teeth are constantly growing and need to be worn down by chewing on fibrous foods. Overgrown teeth can cut into their mouth.
Ingesting Poisonous Plants
Tamed springers are often exposed to plants they wouldn't normally encounter in the wild. Many of these are poisonous to them such as mistletoe.
Warclaw Care
Overview
Warclaws are feline-like spiritual animals found within the Mists. Magical constructs, Warclaws are bound to armor. They bond with whoever puts the armor together and are built for battle. Warclaws can sniff out enemies, inspire others to move faster, and aid in siege warfare.
Native Habitat
The original habitat is unknown but Warclaw armor is found within the Mists.
Diet
Warclaws do not require food as they are magical constructs. However some Warclaws have been known to enjoy the tactile sensation of chewing on armor of a defeated enemy.
Grooming
The armor that a Warclaw is bound to must be maintained. Typical armor cleaning supplies are proper though specialty tonics are also available.
Common Health Issues
Overexertion
Warclaws do not know fear and are prone to overexerting themselves. This can cause them to react more slowly in battle and lead to further injuries.
Raider's Rust
Raider's Rust is a magical ailment, a rogue curse sometimes encountered in the Mists. It causes Warclaw armor to rust and sometimes become unresponsive to summoning.
Low Morale
Warclaws live for the glory of battle so repeated losses can lead to low morale. A warclaw with this condition may disobey instructions and falter in combat.
